Summerheights Golf Links will hold an annual charity tournament to raise $100,000 over the next five years for the “Our Hospital, Our Future” fundraising campaign.
Our Hospital, Our Future is the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation’s fundraising campaign to raise $10 million, which is the public share of the cost to redevelop the new Cornwall hospital McConnell site.
“We have been talking for five years now about picking a non-profit organization to raise funds for,” explains Summerheights founder Dwayne MacLennan, “because so many organizations had supported us. We finally thought that the right choice would be the hospital redevelopment project as this hospital touches everybody. We have been 44 years in this community,” he adds, “and it feels really good to give back.”
MacLennan began construction in 1961 and opened Summerheights in July of 1962 on what had been his cattle farm. “I got tired of chasing my cows off neighbouring farms,” he smiles, “so my wife Jean suggested I turn the land into a golf course. We opened with nine holes and today offer 36.”
Last year, Summerheights was awarded Member of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association. In 2003, Dwayne MacLennan received the Lifetime Business Achievement Award from the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, to add to the 1996 Small Business Award. Although Dwayne is still actively involved with the golf club, son Rory and wife Kathy now manage the day-to-day operations of Summerheights Golf Links.
“We’re happy to get involved with the hospital project,” says Rory. “The Cornwall Community Hospital stretches far beyond Cornwall itself, serving so many other communities such as Martintown, Lancaster and beyond. The tournament registration money will go 100% to the hospital fundraising campaign.”
Tom Wallace, Chair of the Golf Day Committee, is looking forward to working on the event.
“I have been involved with Summerheights since 1971 and have known the MacLennan family for a number of years,” he says. “This is certainly a project that I am very glad to take on. I didn’t even have to think twice about it when asked to be the chair. A committee was easily rounded up to help the hospital for what will be a fun event, a great golf day.”
Our Hospital, Our Future Campaign Treasurer Bob Craig praised Summerheights for its community support.
“The MacLennan family has generously demonstrated a huge commitment to the community and the hospital redevelopment project both financially and through their personal efforts,” Craig states, adding, “Thanks to the MacLennan family contribution and the Summerheights golf committee chaired by Tom Wallace, I have no doubt that the hospital golf tournaments planned will be a great success and a lot of fun.”
The Our Hospital, Our Future Campaign currently stands at the halfway mark of $5 million. When the gifts from the City of Cornwall and the United Counties of SD&G are included, the total exceeds $16 million to date, which is 70% of the $22.8 million required from the community for the hospital redevelopment.
