220 golfers took part in the Golf fundraiser event at Summerheights Golf Links on August 24.
The weather was beautiful, as was the course, and by evening's end over $30,000 was raised for the Our Hospital, Our Future campaign.
A highlight of the day was the golf ball drop. People had purchased numbered golf balls, which were loaded into a helicopter. Then, with everybody looking on, the helicopter dropped the balls from a height of 100 ft on to an improvised green. The closest ball to the hole, or the first one in the hole would win 1/3 of the proceeds, with the remainder being split with the Hospital and the Shriners.
The lucky holder of ball #238 is Gilles Crepeau!
This event will be held each year as Summerheights raises money to meet its commitment of a $100,000 donation. All golf fees raised were donated to the hospital. Each golfer enjoyed 18 holes of golf, golf cart, light lunch, steak dinner and entertainment.
"Our Hospital, Our Future" is the Foundation's fundraising campaign to build a new hospital. The campaign's goal is to raise $10 million of the projected costs of $59 million to redevelop the Cornwall Community Hospital. The remainder of the funds will come from municipal and provincial governments.
The Cornwall Community Hospital is the primary acute care facility for a region encompassing the Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengary, as well as the Mohawk community of Akwesasne. Last year, inpatient and day surgery cases numbered 15,000 and more than 100,000 emergency cases were handled. With a staff of 1,100, the Cornwall Community Hospital is the largest employer in Cornwall.
