Summerheights Golf Links wins award

Lifetime Business Achievement Winner
Saturday, February 22, 2003 at the Annual Cornwall Chamber of Commerence Banquet and Awards Ceremony, Dwayne MacLennan, who founded Summerheights Golf Links Ltd., was awarded the Lifetime Business Achievement Award.
More than 40 years ago, Dwayne tired of chasing his cattle off neighbouring properties.
As he wondered what he was going to do about this, his wife, Jean, had an idea. Why not stop raising cattle and turn the 100 acre farm into a golf course?
At first, said MacLennan, some people joked he was wasting a good farm by turning it into a golf course. "It was a good farm," MacLennan recalled with a laugh. But little by little he worked at it, starting with nine holes on the 100 acres that were once cow pastures, until it now is a thriving business that his son, Rory, now manages.
The course opened in 1961 with green fees going for $1 during the week and $1.50 on the weekend.
"When we had 20 green fees in a day that seemed pretty good," recalled MacLennan.
But MacLennan isn't the retiring type.
"I still go there every day, unless there is good fishing," he said with a smile. "I couldn't do anything else."
Dwayne would like to thank the community and surrounding areas for their support for the past 40 years.
